Angel Wall Hanging

Angel Wall-Hanging

This little Angel Delight Wall-Hanging will watch over your family or friends throughout the year. The angel is fused onto the backing and one simple border is added. Once the wall hanging was basted together, we hand-stitched ours with embroidery floss. The wall hanging is so simple; you could start and finish in one day.

Please note - we could not get our whole Angel Wall-Hanging on the scanner - your wall-hanging will have the same size borders on all sides)

Finished Size 13 1/2" by 13 1/2"

General Instructions

All Seam allowances are ¼" unless otherwise stated. Always press the seam in the direction that will create the least amount of bulk unless otherwise stated. If possible, press towards the darker fabric.

Getting Started

Print off the Angel pattern from the web site. The appliqué design is already reversed so there is no need to trace off the back of the pattern. Once your angel is on the backing square, the angel will go in the same direction as our angel in the picture.

Tracing and Fusing the Angel and Stars

Trace each of the appliqué shapes on the paper side of your fusible web. Be sure to leave enough space between the traced pieces. For tracing, I like to use a mechanical pencil. When tracing be sure to trace both the solid and dotted lines. The dotted lines show you where one appliqué shape overlaps with another appliqué piece.

Cut out each of the traced appliqué pieces slightly larger than your tracing lines. When cutting out the shapes, just go approximately around the outside; there is no need to follow the precise outline of the shape. If you are using a double-sided paper backed fusible web, remove the side of the paper that does not include the tracing lines.

Place each of the tracing appliqué shapes on the wrong side of the fabric that you wish the image to be cut from. You should now have the fusible web on the wrong side with the paper backing and tracing lines facing up. Iron in place using the manufacturer's instructions.

Next cut out the appliqué pieces, following your drawn lines on the paper. Peel off the paper backing.

Fusing to Backing Square

Place your 8 ½" square in front of you. Using the picture as a guide, place the cut out appliqué designs onto the background piece. Remember to over and underlay appliqué pieces correctly using the tracing diagram showing the solid and dashed lines.

Once your angel and stars are in place, fuse the fabric pieces down, following the manufacturer's instructions for the fusible web.

Applying Borders

Taking one of your 3" x 8 ½" border strips previously cut, pin the border strip right sides together on the left side of the centre square. Sew in place using a 1/4" seam. Now, following the same instructions, attach a second border strip to the right side of the centre square. Press the seam on both strips to the border and away from the centre.

Next, add the border strips to the top and bottom of the centre square, using the method describe above. The remaining two border strips previously cut are used to make the top and bottom border pieces. These are the strips that measure 3" x 13". Press seam towards the border (away form the centre square).

Finishing Up

Using the method of you choice, arrange and baste the backing, batting and completed wall-hanging together. Using a spray adhesive like 505 works great for this project. Quilt as desired. You can stitch in the ditch or do so many other free motion designs. We hand stitched around the angel and stars using embroidery floss. You might choose to accent the pictures in the centre by stitching around them - have fun!

Trim away excess backing and batting once the quilting is complete. Now, cut your binding. You will need to cut 2 strips. You will need approximately 60" of binding to go around the outside. Attach your precut strips of binding together with diagonal seams to form a strip of binding long enough to go around the complete outside of the quilt.

Apply the binding to the Angel Wall-Hanging using a French Fold Binding.

To make a French Binding, fold the strip in half lengthwise with the wrong side of the fabric on the inside and iron. Using a ¼" seam, attach the binding by placing the binding strip and quilt raw edges together. When you come to a corner do the following:

Stop ¼ " from the corner
Backstitch
Remove the quilt from the sewing machine presser foot
Fold the binding strip up away from the quilt and make a diagonal fold.
Then, holding this newly created diagonal fold in place with your finger, bring the binding down so the binding raw edges now align with the next side that you will be sewing on. Continue around the quilt.

Fold binding to the backside covering the raw edges and hand or machine stitch in place.

Enjoy!!
