Heading to the beach or the pool tends to be a special event all summer long no matter where you live. This Beach Towel Cover-up not only sews up fast but is also fun to wear. When summer passes, use it in the bathroom after bath and shower time. The length and size of the cover-up can vary depending on the size of towels you use. Have fun with this project - it is a great one to embellish. I made one for my eldest son and embroidered fish on it using Husqvarna Viking Embroidery Disk #35. This card was designed by Patrick Lose and contains some great fun fish!
Materials:
Bath towel - approximately 48’ x 26”
Hand towel - approximately 24” x 15”
Optional Embellishing:
Embroidery card, Silky Thread, Stabilizer
Decorative thread, trim or ribbon
Making your cover-up:
Fold the large bath towel in half lengthwise so you have a long section. Find the center along the folded edge and mark the center with a pin or marking pen. Measure in from that mark 5 ½” to 6”. Draw a line connecting the two marks. Cut along this line (this is making the opening for the hood to be attached)from mark. Place bath towel to one side until the hood is complete.
Hood:
Fold the hand towel in half(right sides together) to form a folded square to form a square roughly 14” by 15” with the fold edge lying to your right hand side. Pin the upper edge together and stitch. Open the towel down to form a triangle so the edge you just stitched forms a line down the center of the triangle. Measure from the top tip of the triangle, down the center seam 1 ½”, mark. Draw a line from this mark across the tip of the triangle. Cut along the line and then stitch the seam close. This will remove the pointed section of the hood and allow the hood to sit better on your head. Turn to right side.
Make a narrow hem on the long unfinished edge. If desired embellish the hand towel with decorative stitches, embroidery or trim.
Putting it together
Place the hood into the slit in the towel, right sides together. Mark the front of the hood with the front of the towel, do the same at the back. On the hood front, the hood sections should lay side by side but not over lapping. Pin hoop to towel and stitch around. Attaching the hood to the towel. Turn to right side.
Armholes
Place the beach cover-up in front of you. Starting at the fold and measuring down the side, measure down 10 inches. Mark this point. Stitch down from the mark you make to the bottom of the towel. Do the same on the other side.
Place beach cover-up over your head and enjoy!
